Nepal began exporting electricity to India on Saturday as hydroelectricity production from run-of-the-river projects increased with the onset of the Himalayan country’s monsoon.

Last year too, Nepal exported hydroelectric power to India from June to November.

“We have started selling 600 MW hours of electricity to India since Saturday as there is surplus electricity in the country,” said Suresh Bhattarai, a spokesman for the Nepal Electricity Authority.

Some time ago, Nepal was importing up to 400 MW of electricity from India to meet its domestic demand.

In Nepal, domestic electricity demand increases in winter while supply decreases, and in summer demand decreases while supply increases.

Most of the hydropower projects operating in Nepal are based on a flowing river.

Last year, Nepal earned about 12 billion rupees from exporting electricity to India.

With the onset of the monsoon, hydroelectric power plants in Nepal produced excess electricity from the elevated water levels in the Himalayan rivers.
