We’ve tracked prices over the past year to find out which products are rising the most and which supermarkets are offering the best deals. Starting in March 2022, we looked at the price of seven essential items in the seven biggest supermarkets in Wales.
A year ago, shopping baskets from different stores showed a difference of more than £2 between the most expensive and cheapest stores. Over the past 12 months, Aldi has consistently come out on top when it comes to the cheapest price for a basket of seven items, but every supermarket has seen big increases in mainly milk and bread.
The first set of prices was taken on the morning of Thursday 17 March 2022 from seven different supermarkets in South Wales, including Aldi, Asda, Tesco, M&S, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons. The second set was taken from the same supermarket on Friday 17 March 2023.
Prices have increased in all supermarkets over the past year. Aldi was the cheapest in 10 out of 12 months, but our year-on-year comparison showed that the supermarket with the lowest price increase was Morrisons (7.7%) where the price went from £10.35 to £11.15.
