What’s cooking in downtown Martinsburg: The Garage on King shares vision, encourages involvement | Journal-news


MARTINSBURG — The Garage on King will soon bring another unique aspect to the atmosphere of downtown Martinsburg.

With a planned launch in the spring of 2023, the team at The Garage on King is currently looking for restaurant owners and those interested in becoming involved in helping to create this new food hall.

What has been known as Dunn & Siebert Sales, at 419 W. King St. in Martinsburg, since the late 1940s/early 1950s, will soon become the first of its kind as a food hall downtown.

Following the trend of the hundreds of food halls across the country, The Garage on King is looking to host eight different food vendors offering a wide variety of food. These options will range from local favorites to international dishes.

Located at the corner of King and Raleigh streets, The Garage on King will be the first food hall in the Eastern Panhandle.

“We expect The Garage to be one of the main food attractions in our region for locals and visitors for many years to come. The food hall industry has grown exponentially across all major cities in the US and is now a reality in Martinsburg,” owner Diego Losada said. “We are actively looking for entrepreneurs and restauranteurs that are interested in being a part of this new endeavour. We envision this to be a relatively low-cost alternative to launch a restaurant and gain market-wide recognition.”

There will be two open informational sessions at The Hub at 126 E. Burke St. in Martinsburg — one at 6 pm on Oct. 4 and another on Oct. 27 at 6 pm — for a breakdown of how everything works.

Losada expressed that in the current stage, The Garage on King is finding out what will work in the space to create the most successful plan.

“I want it to be thoughtful. I want it to be something that people think about and ask themselves what could work in this market, what do we want as consumers and what do potential vendors have to offer. Bring your ideas to the table and let’s talk about it,” he said. “There is a lot to do here. This is the first of its kind, and we want to try to make it successful.”

Of the three main sections of the building on the property — the showroom, the garage and the warehouse — the first space that Losada is envisioning to be used is the garage area, which will include the launch of the food hall.

“We are launching the food fall in the garage area of ​​the property, and that is where I think we can test the concept. If it is successful, I want to expand it into the showroom, and if that also works, I want to expand it into the warehouse in the back to do different things,” he said.

“Some of it may not only be food stalls offering prepared food, but maybe in the warehouse, you could have a farmers market on the weekends, where people can come get fresh food or fish or a butcher or different products. It could become more of a marketplace instead of just a place to order food,” he continued.

Expanding his idea even further, Losada said he would like to get the Blue Ridge Community and Technical Institute culinary program involved in a way where students could possibly create a partnership with the food hall, so they have a space to bring their ideas to life.

“There is an aspect of the food hall that I wanted to be an incubator of talent,” he said.
