I knew it.
When a survey of NFL fans’ favorite game day foods didn’t list bratwurst as the champion of Green Bay Packers fans, I got suspicious. Digging deeper into the results it turned out that just one Cheesehead named bratwurst as the favorite food to nosh on game day.
I tossed a red flag to challenge those results. I created a survey and called on Packers Nation to give me the truth about their preferred game day food.
Although this survey doesn’t pass scientific methodology standards and uses self-reported data and came with a heavy dose of outrage in my story that probably baked in a bunch of bias, there is enough visual evidence to overturn the bratwurst call in the previous survey .
As of the writing of this article, 441 people responded to my Google form questionnaire. Of those 300 (68%) said they were from Wisconsin.
Regardless of where they call home, 229 (51.9%) named bratwurst as their favorite game day food.
Pizza (10.2%) came in second with chicken wings and dips (6.3%) tying for third.
Seeing dips — like artichoke, bean, guacamole, etc — beat burgers (5.9%) lends more credibility to the findings, in my opinion.
The cheese and sausage platter (4.1%) was also a popular choice. Again, something Wisconsinites understand is an essential part of any game day spread.
I listed as many foods I thought would be strong contenders for the title of most favored, but it wasn’t a perfect list. I didn’t include chili.
But you all picked me up using the “other” option to give chili six votes, the most of any write-in food.
Leaving an open-ended option always produces some of the best results.
- Ham sandwich. Heck yeah, especially if you’re getting free rolls with a 1-pound purchase.
- Beer. Of course beer made the list.
- Popcorn. It’s only one of my favorite foods of all time.
- Raw ground beef. The only food gambling I do is with a box of chocolates.
- Milk bones. Even my dog thinks you’re fibbing.
- Bacon-wrapped tenderloin. You have my email and social media handles if you’re sending out invites to your next game day party.
As a footnote, I asked if higher food prices would impact fans’ game day food choices. It wasn’t a required question to answer, but 419 people responded with 83.8% (351) saying, yeah no, we’re gonna keep on eating what and as much as we like on game day.
