FIRST AND FIVE
NUMBER 2
This is just the second game between Western Michigan and San Jose State. The first meeting came last season, with the Broncos winning 23-3 at Waldo Stadium. This is also the second straight week that the Broncos and their opponent have met for the second time. Last Saturday’s game against No. 23 Pittsburgh was also the second meeting all-time between the two programs.

GOING GOING, BACK BACK, TO CALI CALI
Senior safety Delano Ware gets to head back to his home state this weekend as the Broncos take on the Spartans. Ware hails from Richmond, Calif., which is located just north of Oakland and about 90 minutes from San Jose.

Ware joined Western Michigan prior to the 2021 season after spending three seasons at the University of Illinois. Since then he has been one of, if not the top tackler in the Bronco secondary. Last season he finished with 40 tackles and has 18 through the first three games this season. He is the only native from the Golden State on the roster this season.

COACH TO GIRLS
This weekend is the 15th annual Coach to Cure MD Awareness Weekend. Coach to Cure MD is an initiative of the Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy and was launched in conjunction with the American Football Coaches Association back in 2008. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is the most common fatal genetic disorder during childhood, primarily affecting boys of all races and cultures. People with Duchenne develop progressive muscle weakness that eventually causes loss of mobility, wheelchair reliance, and a decline in respiratory and cardiac function. There is no cure for Duchenne and life expectancy can extend to age 30.

To help drive awareness and donations, the Western Michigan coaching staff will be wearing Coach to Cure MD patches on their shirts on the sidelines of Saturday’s game. Fans can engage with Coach to Cure MD by using the hashtag #TackleDuchenne to spread the word on social media, by texting the word “CURE” to 501501 to give $25, or by donating in honor of their favorite coach on the CoachToCureMD.org website .

ALL BUNCHED UP
Western Michigan’s veteran linebacking core of Corvin Moment, Zaire Barnes and Ryan Selig make up three of the top four tackle totals on the team through the first three games. Moment leads the team with 25 total tackles, with Barnes at 23 and Selig at 21. The trio does have some competition. After a career-high 11-tackle performance against No. 23 Pittsburgh, junior defensive end Andre Carter sits tied with Barnes with 23 tackles. He’s also tied with Selig with two tackles for loss.

FITTING IN NICELY
Western Michigan’s venture into the transfer portal has been a successful one through the first three games this season, with several making impacts. Graduate transfer wide receiver Jehlani Galloway, a transfer from Boston College, is already the second-leading receiver with 10 catches for 142 yards and he leads all Broncos, with more than three receptions, in average yards per catch with 14.2. Fellow wideout transfer AJ Abbot caught his first touchdown as a Bronco against the Panthers and has five receptions for 61 yards this season.

On the other side of the ball city transfers Warren Dabney and Hozey Haji-Badri have made an impact on the defensive line. Dabney has 10 tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss, while Haji-Badri has five tackles and one tackle for loss. Both have seen significant snaps this season and have started all three games.
